How to Groom a Cavoodle: A Step-By-Step Guide

A common misconception noticed when looking for Cavoodles for sale is that they are low maintenance because they are low shedding. However, despite shedding little-to-no hair, it still requires regular grooming. A cross between the Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, this mixed breed is moderate-to-high maintenance depending on its coat. How, then, do you keep it looking its best?

Grooming Your Cavoodle

A Cavoodle for sale that inherits its Poodle parent’s coat will not shed much but will still need frequent brushing. Meanwhile, a Cavoodle with a Cavalier-like coat will shed more but won’t need to be brushed often. Either way, this crossbreed requires regular grooming as it has a double coat. It is recommended that a Cavoodle be groomed as early as 16 weeks old to get it used to the process. Once it matures, a full groom by a professional is suggested every six weeks. Should you choose to groom your pet instead, here are some helpful tips and tricks:

1. Brushing

For a Cavoodle, daily brushing is ideal. However, once every two days is also fine. The reason for this is to prevent knots from forming. This is because matted fur is uncomfortable for this dog as with other breeds. It is advised that a Cavoodle be brushed when it is still a puppy to get it used to the sensation before it gets its adult coat at seven months old.

The best brush to use when grooming this breed is a de-matting brush because it does a wonderful job of gently removing loose hair and taking knots out. Begin with your dog’s legs, then work your way up its body. Make sure to brush its fur gently and in small increments. Should you have a difficult time unknotting your Cavoodle’s fur, try a detangling spray.

2. Bathing

Generally, the Cavoodle needs to be bathed bi-weekly or whenever it gets dirty. During the warmer months, it should be bathed every two to three weeks. In the cooler months, bathing is less necessary.

It is important that you be mindful of the type of shampoo and conditioner you use for your pooch. This is because its skin is quite sensitive. It is recommended that you choose a pH-balanced shampoo and conditioner so that your Cavoodle does not experience any skin or eye problems.

When bathing this dog, use lukewarm water and place it in a suitable tub. Stroke it gently with your fingers, then remove it from the tub. Finally, give it a quick towel dry.

3. Coat Trimming

Regardless of the fur your Cavoodle has, it is suggested that trimming be done every six weeks. Focus on the eye area, as eye hair makes it difficult for dogs to see. In extreme conditions, hair around the eyes can irritate.

Before trimming your canine, place it somewhere where it will likely stay still. Make sure you are using a good pair of scissors. Start trimming from the head, making sure to cover your pooch’s eyes while you do this. Also, be careful when trimming around its ears. When you’ve reached your Cavoodle’s body, try to use an electric clipper to make the job a lot easier. If your dog reacts negatively to the sound of the device, switch back to using scissors.

4. Nail Trimming

Just like humans, dogs also need their nails trimmed. Regular human clippers work for Cavoodle puppies as their nails are still thin. When they age, however, a claw trimmer that is specifically designed for them should be used to avoid cutting away the pink vessel that runs into their nail. Ideally, nail clipping should be done every two weeks.

5. Teeth Cleaning

Cavoodles are prone to plaque and tartar buildup, which is why their teeth need to be brushed frequently. While some pet parents prefer using dental chews or toys, toothbrushes that are specifically designed for pooches are still recommended.

Place the bristles of the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your dog’s teeth. Start brushing gently in a circular motion on the gum line so that you reach the outer surfaces of your pooch’s teeth and gums well. Finally, try to brush the inside of its teeth. If this seems impossible, do not worry too much as your Cavoodle’s tongue will help clean that area for you.
