The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the common pet fish. They’re easy to obtain — almost all pet shops have goldfish — as well as easy to keep. Goldfish is one of the earliest domesticated fish, first bred in ancient China. The goldfish emerged as a mutation from carp, which was usually silver, and people had started to keep the gold variety as pets in their ornamental ponds.

Few goldfish even reach half this size. The longest goldfish so far measured 18.7 inches (from snout to tail-fin end), and was discovered in Hapert, Netherlands in 2003.

Goldfish live over 40 years

That is, given the right conditions, a goldfish can live up to 20 to 40 years. However, their usual life span reaches only up to five to six years due to being kept in smaller aquariums.
